This movie had none of that
Synopsis
A powerful executive puts her career and family on the line when she begins a passionate affair with her much younger intern. Jean Reno shot scenes for the film, but was cut entirely from the finished movie. Starring Graham Norton i gosti: Nicole Kidman/Cynthia Erivo/James Norton/Chris McClausland/Benson Boone (2024). We’ve seen this movie many times, and it’s been done much better. That’s the most annoying thing about it. This story can be done right with emotion, sensuality, and intensity. What it lacked most, and what was its biggest flaw: it wasn’t believable at all. Not the characters, not the plot, not the backstory. There’s only one person in this whole journey you feel for, and you feel for him because of the only decent performance worth mentioning.
The premise was fascinating
And even he gets ripped off with a terrible story arc before it’s all said and done. A brilliant, married businesswoman with a dramatic past begins a lurid affair with a young intern. Lifetime has built an entire channel around this premise. Nicole Kidman in the lead role is also easy to get excited about. She’s a beautiful, experienced actress who exudes power. But this was just a waste of all those building blocks. The story of « Baby Girl, » while understandable, is ultra-thin. We get a little insight into how Romy (Nicole Kidman) rose to heights in the corporate world. It’s unclear who does what at the firm and what, if anything, happens there.
We just don’t believe it
They bring in a new group of interns, including a pompous, cheeky brat named Samuel (Harris Dickinson). He notices Romy’s quirks right away and uses them to somehow manipulate her into risking everything. At this point in the film, it becomes clear that Romy has serious issues when it comes to sex. Either from her past – which is addressed but never really explained – or from trying to deal with her position of power. The chemistry between Kidman and Dickinson is devoid of any magic or attraction. And when scenes like the ones in this film, which live and breathe on chemistry, aren’t there, it just becomes sad and ridiculous. Samuel comes across as a spoiled punk and you kind of hate him from the start. This makes it even harder to believe that Romy could have even the slightest interest in this guy, fetish or not. She could find something better on Google.
Also at the center of it is Romy’s husband (Jacob) Antonio Banderas
Jacob is a loving, patient, caring man who does his best to understand Romy and stand by her. There’s no doubt that they have intimacy issues, but you get the feeling that they are being pushed down instead of talked about. Even when he finds out about the affair, he is fair and reacts as expected. Banderas is the only actor and character in this film that I can feel sympathy for. (Side note) – If you’re sick of the movie and want to be entertained somehow, just close your eyes. All the scenes with Banderas now feel like a Puss N Boots movie. The biggest disappointment and shock is that the movie was written and directed by a woman. Halina Reijn is a capable filmmaker on both sides of the camera. If anyone should be able to get across what she wants to get across from Romy, it’s her.
If a man was making this movie, I would understand the discrepancy
I would tell him to stop trying to get inside a woman’s head on these things. But there is no excuse here for what we get from the plot and the portrayals. Baby Girl is rated R for strong sexual content, nudity and language. Even before the first scene comes into focus, you know what this movie is about. Make sure you are comfortable with the company you are watching the movie with and that you are both mature enough not to giggle during the sexy scenes. I am giving one star because zero stars might look like I forgot to add some.
