Synopsis
A modern story about finding a fortune in the world of West Texas oil rigs

A landman, at least someone who works in the petroleum industry, acts as a middleman between the exploration companies and the landowners. Typically, a landman’s job is to negotiate and enter into contracts with landowners with mineral rights to lease those rights to the company they represent.

Essentially, they manage the land and secure the leases so they can drill for oil and gas. Like a foreman on a construction site, they build roads, housing for the workers (men’s camps), assemble the excavation machinery, and drill the well itself, especially in remote locations. They are also part fixer, problem solver, and mediator..
A very good start to two episodes!
Billy Bob Thorton (Tommy Norris) is great in the lead role. Jacob Lofland (Cooper Norris) was one of my first discoveries when he was a rookie on Justified. Ali Larter (Angela Norris) as Tommy’s ex-wife and Michelle Randolph (Ainsley Norris), Tommy’s daughter, are unbearable and I’m already hoping that really bad things happen to them!

The character of Jon Hamm (Monty Miller), who owns the company and is Tommy’s boss, may represent my hopefully unfulfilled fears for this up-and-coming series. In short, I fear that creator/writer Taylor Sheridan may fall into the bumper sticker mentality and reduce the series to « Big Oil: Bad! If that happens, I’ll change my rating and be gone!
